For more than a week, hundreds of dead fish have appeared on the shores of Lake Bestova, 7 km from Vlora. There are also dozens of dead turtles on the shore. The mayor of Bestrovë village, Anesti Korreta, says that this is the first time such a mass death has occurred.
"Historically, there has been fish here all the time. It was hunted by the freshwater fishing enterprise during the communist era. No one fishes from our area because the water here is polluted. It is a rainwater catchment. No such mass die-off has occurred. It could be about 1500 kg of dead fish'- says Korreti for 'Reporttv'.
The veterinary service in Vlora and the Fisheries Inspectorate have started investigations. Inspectorate specialists were there today to take samples of the water and the surrounding area to discover the causes of this mass death.
'We will take the samples and take them for analysis. A month ago, a similar situation occurred in a reserve near Fier, where fish had died due to high temperatures.- says the inspector of the veterinary service Demir Dervishi.
A resident of the area expresses concern as no action is being taken to clean the water of dead fish. It excludes the track of a possible poisoning.
"It's been a week and we haven't seen anyone. They say it's poisoned, but I don't believe there's any live fish in there yet. Here, if they come to fish at night, there is no day"
In addition to the bad smell, dead fish can also become the cause of the spread of an epidemic.
