The Christmas tree at New York's Rockefeller Center has been lit, marking what many consider the true start of the holiday season. The lighting of the giant tree draws thousands of people to Rockefeller Plaza every year.
The tradition dates back to 1933. Under a light snowfall, the big tree was lit up with 50,000 colorful lights and a Swarovski crystal star on December 4.
This year's tree is a Norway spruce almost 23 meters tall, with a diameter of over 13 meters and weighing eleven tons. It comes from West Stockbridge in Massachusetts, the first time since 1959 that a tree has come from the Bay State.
