A rare event happened in a family in Heraklion, Greece, where a 55-year-old grandmother became a surrogate mother for the sake of her daughter and gave birth to a healthy boy. This is one of the rare cases both in Greece and even around the world.
The event was announced by the gynecologist of the "surrogate grandmother", Alexandros Zervakis, through a post on social networks. The grandmother lives in Crete, while the daughter lives in Athens. They had been to several doctors but their efforts had failed in the past.
"They met me disappointed and confused. We came up with a plan as the surrogate grandmother needed some corrective interventions so she could get pregnant. We encountered some difficulties such as pre-existing hypertension, age and strict legal frameworks. The preparation lasted two years with operations, examinations and commissions for approvals from the National Sterility Authority", described doctor Alexandros Zervakis.
