A serious event was recently recorded in New York. Two teenage girls, a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old, died after a house fire in Newark, NJ, according to a press release from the Essex County District Attorney's Office released to PEOPLE.
The birthday of one of the two deceased girls was being celebrated outside and the festivities were moved indoors when it was cold, someone told the New York Daily News. Later, around 12:30 a.m. local time, the two girls were "playing with fire next to a couch in the hallway" on the second floor, according to the ECPO press release.
As the fire spread through the house, it blew out windows on the second and third floors. Authorities found the two children unresponsive and with severe burns, officials said. Although first responders attempted to revive them, they were pronounced dead at the scene. The girls have not been publicly identified.
