A horrific accident was reported in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand in the Almora district on Monday, November 4, according to the Associated Press, CNN and CBS News.
The bus, which was built to carry 42 passengers but had about 60 people on board, was headed from Garhwal in the Himalayas to the town of Ramnagar – roughly 120 miles south of Garhwal.
While moving, the bus lost control, veered off a hilly road and fell into a river about 200 meters down the road, senior state official Deepak Rawat told AP where 36 individuals were unfortunately killed and 6 others injured.
Several passengers either jumped from the vehicle or ran away. Those who survived then notified the authorities about the accident.
According to CBS News, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said emergency crews were “working quickly to evacuate the injured and take them to the nearest health center for treatment. Instructions have also been given for transporting seriously injured passengers if required."
